What are the rules at a Singapore dog run?

Off-leash is permitted only inside the fence. NParks' conditions: your dog must be healthy and without open wounds, up to date on vaccinations, sterilised or not in heat, and supervised at all times. Scheduled breeds stay muzzled even inside.

The AVS Dog Run Etiquette and User Safety guide adds:

  • Unleash only between the double gates, and leash again before you step back into the park.
  • No human food inside; toys are discouraged — both trigger resource guarding.
  • Watch body language. Stiff posture, raised hackles, cowering or trying to get away means your dog wants out — take it out.
  • Clean up immediately. Poop bags are on the AVS "what to bring" list, so carry your own.
  • Children under 12 should not enter dog runs; The Palawan gives the same advice.

Licensing is cheap: S$15 a year or S$35 for life for a sterilised dog. Our HDB and licensing guide covers the process.

Which dog runs are best for small dogs?

Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park: a separate small-dog pen, water, benches and enough regulars that a nervous toy breed can watch first. Sembawang is reported to have a small-dog pen; K9 Park at NEX splits big and small dogs by design.

For a puppy's first visit, pick a weekday morning at a small run such as Surin Avenue or Guillemard Road. Size-mismatched play causes most injuries; if a large dog arrives and yours freezes, leave.

When should you go in the heat or rain?

Before 9am or after 6pm. From 11am to 4pm the ground at unshaded runs like Tampines Boulevard, Jurong Lake Gardens and K9 Park burns pads, and flat-faced breeds overheat within minutes.

  • Water: bring your own. Bedok Town Park and Yishun Park have none inside the pen.
  • After rain: grass runs turn to mud; gravel (Bishan) and cement-path runs (West Coast) recover faster. Our monsoon dog-care guide covers paws and skin.
  • Know the signs: heavy panting, drooling and wobbling are early heatstroke — stop, shade, water, vet.

Frequently asked questions

Are dog runs in Singapore free?

Yes. Every NParks dog run is free and unstaffed, and most are open 24 hours. Sengkang Town Council's Rivervale run, the Bukit Canberra run, K9 Park at NEX and The Palawan's run on Sentosa are also free to use.

Which dog run in Singapore has a separate area for small dogs?

Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park is the best-known, with a dedicated small-dog pen beside the main run. Sembawang Park is also reported to have a small-dog pen, and K9 Park at NEX splits its rooftop run into big-dog and small-dog zones.

Can my dog be off leash in a park in Singapore?

Only inside a fenced dog run. Everywhere else in public your dog must be leashed and under control, and NParks bans dogs from the nature reserves entirely. Scheduled breeds must stay muzzled even inside a run.
