Pet Insurance Waiting Period Singapore: All 4 Plans (2026)

Quick answer

The pet insurance waiting period in Singapore is 14 days to 1 month for accidents and 60–90 days for illness as of 2026. Hereditary conditions wait 12 months on three plans; Liberty excludes them. Nothing that starts inside a waiting period is ever covered.

What is the pet insurance waiting period in Singapore?

Illness cover starts 60 days after purchase with MSIG PawEasy, 90 days with Income Happy Tails, and 3 months with Liberty PetCare and Etiqa. Accident cover starts after 14 days with MSIG and 1 month with Liberty and Etiqa.

Plan (2026) Accident Illness Hereditary and congenital
MSIG PawEasy 14 days 60 days 12 months, five listed conditions, pets under 6 at entry
Income Happy Tails None stated (from start date) 90 days 12 months, specified conditions
Liberty PetCare 1 month 3 months Excluded
Etiqa (Tiq) 1 month 3 months 12 months, if a clinical exam form is filed within 30 days

Income's page lists only the 90-day wait for sickness and the 12-month wait for specified hereditary and congenital conditions, so accidents are covered from the start date. Liberty adds a 3-month wait for theft cover. MSIG's wording excludes any injury "within the first 14 days" and any illness "within the first 60 days" of the commencement date, and the same clock applies to any optional benefit you add later.

What happens if my dog gets sick during the waiting period?

The claim is refused, and the condition becomes pre-existing, so it is excluded for as long as you hold the policy. A skin flare-up in week three of an Income policy is not a delayed claim; it is a permanent exclusion for that skin condition.

MSIG's wording is explicit that illness which "occurs or recurs" within the first 60 days is excluded, which catches relapses of something diagnosed before the policy as well. If your pet does fall ill in the window, still see a vet and keep the invoice; the exclusion is limited to that condition, and an undocumented illness is harder to ring-fence later.

Insurance starts paying only after the waiting period has run, so the clock should start before your pet's first symptom

Does the waiting period restart when I renew or switch?

It restarts if you switch insurers or let the policy lapse, because each new policy has its own commencement date. No insurer's page says the wait re-runs on a continuous renewal; MSIG's wording ends the policy after the period of insurance "unless policy is renewed with no break in cover".

Switching to a cheaper plan therefore costs you a fresh 60–90 day illness wait, and every condition your pet has been treated for in the meantime becomes pre-existing on the new policy. Compare plans carefully once, then stay. Our pet insurance comparison tool puts all four plans side by side.

What is the best age to buy pet insurance in Singapore?

Before your pet turns four, and ideally within the first month home. Income and Etiqa lock in the lowest 20% co-insurance for pets enrolled before age four, and Liberty and MSIG do so before age five; that rate stays for life.

Plan Earliest entry Latest entry Lowest co-insurance if enrolled
Liberty PetCare 8 weeks Under 9 years 20% before age 5
Etiqa (Tiq) 8 weeks Under 9 years 20% before age 4
Income Happy Tails 16 weeks Under 9 years 20% before age 4
MSIG PawEasy 16 weeks Up to 9 years 20% before age 5

A puppy collected at 8 weeks can be insured the same week with Liberty or Etiqa, so its illness wait ends at about five months. Income's page says it "may" continue cover past nine on new terms, so the age-nine cut-off matters less than getting in early.

Does pet insurance cover vaccinations during the waiting period?

No. Vaccinations are routine care and are excluded on every plan whether or not the waiting period has passed. Income lists "preventive healthcare including vaccinations" as excluded, and MSIG's wording excludes vaccinations outright.

The one partial exception is Liberty, which excludes vaccinations "unless selected plan has Wellness Care benefit"; that benefit sits on the Furtastic, Ultipaw and Pawsh tiers only. Budget the puppy course separately using our guide to dog vaccination costs in Singapore.

How much do these plans cost while you wait?

Liberty's premiums run from S$392.40 a year on its entry tier to S$1,471.50 on its top tier, at 2025 rates as reported in June 2026; the other three insurers quote by pet. You pay from day one even though illness cover starts two to three months later.

That is not wasted money: accident cover is live within a month on every plan, and the illness clock only starts once you have bought. Full premiums, limits and exclusions are in our guide to pet insurance in Singapore, and cat-specific figures are in cat insurance in Singapore.

What to do next

  • Buy in the first week home, before any vet visit other than vaccinations, so the illness wait ends before the first likely problem.
  • Book a vet check inside the waiting period anyway and keep the notes; a documented clean bill of health protects later claims.
  • Use the pet insurance comparison tool to pick a plan you will keep, because switching restarts the clock.

Frequently asked questions

What is the waiting period for pet insurance in Singapore?

Illness cover starts 60 days after purchase with MSIG PawEasy, 90 days with Income Happy Tails and 3 months with Liberty PetCare and Etiqa. Accident cover starts after 14 days with MSIG and 1 month with Liberty and Etiqa; Income states no separate accident wait. Hereditary conditions wait 12 months on MSIG, Income and Etiqa; Liberty excludes them.

What happens if my dog gets sick during the waiting period?

The insurer will not pay that claim, and the condition is then treated as pre-existing, so it stays excluded for the life of the policy. This is why the best time to buy is before the first vet visit for anything other than vaccinations.

What is the best age to buy pet insurance in Singapore?

Before your pet turns four. Income Happy Tails and Etiqa lock in the lowest 20% co-insurance for pets enrolled before age four; Liberty and MSIG draw the line at five. Puppies can be enrolled from 8 weeks with Liberty and Etiqa, or 16 weeks with Income and MSIG. No insurer accepts a new pet aged nine or over.
