How this tool works

The model adds one-time costs to annual food, grooming and care allowances. Size changes food, coat changes grooming, and boarding uses the number of nights entered. Optional insurance and dental care are included only when selected. Adoption assumes initial procedures are included; verify this with the shelter.

First year = one-time costs + annual care. The 13-year scenario = one-time costs + 13 × annual care. Monthly = annual care ÷ 12. This holds costs constant and excludes inflation, emergency treatment and extra care for chronic illness. Thirteen years is a planning scenario, not a lifespan prediction.

Singapore licences use the AVS base rate for the first three dogs, before payment rebates: S$35 lifetime when sterilised or S$90 each year when unsterilised. The model does not apply puppy concessions or multi-year discounts. Veterinary allowances do not prescribe a treatment schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Are these live prices?

No. The editable choices generate illustrative budget scenarios from stored allowances. Obtain current quotes for your own dog, and keep a separate contingency for unexpected care.

Does adoption remove ongoing costs?

No. Adoption can reduce initial costs, but food, grooming, veterinary care and other running costs remain. Ask which initial procedures are included in the adoption fee.
